When cooking vegetables, timing is usually key. The fork test is the difference between a perfectly cooked brussel sprout and a pile of mush. Overcooked vegetables are such a turn off and can actually ruin a dish.
Often in my recipes I will tell you to fork test your food after a certain amount of time. In the case of most vegetables, it simply means pressing the fork gently into the food and seeing how easily the fork should slide through. Too much resistance means your veggies are still a little raw. As a general rule, look for the thickest portion of the product your are testing. If the fork slides through easily, you know that all your veggies are likely cooked. When a recipe tells you to cook for a certain time, begin fork testing 5 minutes earlier than their suggested time just in case! It's a simple tip for enjoying perfectly cooked vegetables every time!
