It's time for another nutritional battle here at the blog and this time around it's chik'n burgers clamoring for the top spot. Chik'n burgers are a favourite of mine, I absolutely love how crunchy and delicious they are. I've tried a variety of brands and quite honestly, I've found that a lot of them are pretty similar in almost every way. Texturally, flavour wise, and appearance wise, there's not a huge discrepancy between different burgers which essentially means you'll enjoy whichever brand you bring home! When it comes to nutrition however, there's some differences between these leading vegan chik'n burgers. Let's get this battle started to find out which chik'n burger is the most nutritious choice! ROUND 1 CALORIES BOCA - 130 GARDEIN - 160 MORNINGSTAR - 170 YVES - 230 WINNER - BOCA Although all 4 patties are very similar in their appearance, their nutritional stats tell a varied story. There is an 100 calorie difference between the first place competitor and last place which if you start eating more than one burger, could quickly add up. The BOCA brand comes in with the fewest calories per patty which means you're safe to load up on the toppings and even go in for a second! ROUND 2 FAT BOCA - 4g / 6% DV GARDEIN - 7g / 11% DV MORNINGSTAR - 7g / 9% DV YVES - 13g / 20% DV WINNER - BOCA BOCA once again comes in at first place with the least amount of fat per patty. Saving the fat means you can get away with some extra creamy toppings like mayo and avocado without worrying that you're overdoing it on the fat intake. Unfortunately for the YVES brand, they've come in last place once again with 3 times the fat per patty of the first place winner. ROUND 3 SODIUM BOCA - 640mg / 27% DV GARDEIN - 310g / 13% DV MORNINGSTAR - 320mg / 14% DV YVES - 430mg / 18% DV WINNER - GARDEIN Too much sodium can lead to a slew of health issues which is why it's important to stay within the safe boundaries of sodium intake. GARDEIN takes the crown with 310mg of sodium per patty, half the amount of the fourth place competitor. ROUND 4 FIBER BOCA - 3g / 12% DV GARDEIN - 3g /12% DV MORNINGSTAR - 3g / 9% DV YVES - 2g / 8% DV WINNER - 3 WAY TIE! BOCA, GARDEIN, MORNINGSTAR We have a 3 way tie folks! All 3 brands have 3g of fiber per patty which is 12% of your daily fiber requirements. Makes choosing a patty an easy task when they are all providing similar health benefits! ROUND 5 PROTEIN BOCA - 11g / 22% DV GARDEIN - 13g / NO % GIVEN MORNINGSTAR - 9g / 13% DV YVES - 14g / NO % GIVEN WINNER - YVES Yves takes its first win of the challenge after coming in fourth for nearly every other challenge. Protein is crucial in our diets and the YVES variety provides 14g of protein per delicious chik'n patty! ROUND 6 VITAMINS & MINERALS WINNER - YVES Going solely off the information provided on the nutritional labels, the YVES brand of patties provides the most vitamins and minerals per patty. With over 20% of your daily requirement of 5 important vitamins and minerals, the YVES brand chik'n is the biggest bang for the buck! WINNER .......... ......... ........ ....... ...... ..... .... ... .. . BOCA!!! The BOCA brand chik'n patties take the crown this competition with wins in 3 of the 6 categories! Coming in with the least amount of fat & calories and providing the most fiber per patty, the BOCA chik'n patties are the most nutritious chik'n patty available on the market!

When I first started working at Healthy Mama Restaurant, I was pretty naive in terms of all natural products. I was happily rubbing chemicals on my armpits, dousing myself in chemically body washes and creams, blissfully unaware of how bad these things are for our bodies. Through the years, I've learned so much through my boss, her husband who seems to know absolutely everything about life, and just the environment itself. As I've grown and learned, I've tried a variety of natural products. some of which were fantastic while others were unfortunately bad and ineffective. I figured I'd share with you guys what natural products I'm currently using / consuming and some that I've tried and probably wouldn't use again!
Here's a couple products I've used that I wouldn't personally recommend!
How about you guys? What natural / cruelty free products are you obsessed with? Let me know in the comments <3
HAPPY VEG It's grilling season y'all which means burgers, brats, and everything in between. We've already dived in to the most nutritious hot dogs and burgers so the only grilling necessity we have left is sausages. I love me a good brat, especially off of the BBQ. The slight charring adds something special to every bite and the intense heat seals in juices and leaves you with the most delectable sausage looking for a bun to call home. It's time for Battle Spicy Brat. Let's meet our competitors!
ROUND 1 CALORIES FIELD ROAST - 230 BEYOND - 190 YVES - 150 WINNER - YVES Yves Hot Italian takes the win this round with nearly 100 calories less per link than 3rd place, the Field Roast variety. Beyond meat sits comfortably in second place with 190 calories per link. Always keep in mind what you're topping your brats with because condiments are where sneaky, hidden calories add up! ROUND 2 FAT FIELD ROAST - 8g / 10% DV BEYOND - 12g / 18% DV YVES - 5g / 8% WINNER - YVES Once again the YVES Hot Italian takes the win with less than half the fat per link than the 3rd place spot. While fat can often mean flavour, double the fat per link can get you into trouble. The YVES or the FIELD ROAST variety offers a healthy dose of fat without going overboard! ROUND 3 SODIUM FIELD ROAST - 580mg / 25% DV BEYOND - 500mg / 21% DV YVES - 600mg / 25% DV WINNER - BEYOND All 3 options are within 100mg of sodium but surprisingly, the BEYOND link contains the least amount of sodium per link. While the BEYOND version takes the win, all 3 varieties contain up to 25% of your daily allowance of sodium and that's without condiments or bun, meaning that number is likely considerably higher when all is said and done. Keep these sausages down to a once and a while treat to avoid a sodium disaster! ROUND 4 CARBS FIELD ROAST - 11g / 4% DV BEYOND - 5g / 2% DV YVES - 8g / 3% DV WINNER - BEYOND The BEYOND brand takes the crown again this round with the fewest carbohydrates per brat. In fact, there is less than half the amount of carbs in the BEYOND brat versus the last place finisher, the FIELD ROAST variety. There's nothing wrong with a bit of carbs but we must also factor in the bun and condiments which will ultimately push those numbers higher. It's safer to go for a lower carb option to reduce the overall intake after the brat is dressed up. ROUND 5 FIBER FIELD ROAST - 0g BEYOND - 3g / 12% YVES - 2g / 8% WINNER - BEYOND Fiber is one of the most crucial things for our body's well being and for keeping us regular and healthy. Getting enough fiber is incredibly important for our gut health which is why it is unfortunate that the FIELD variety has no fiber whatsoever. The BEYOND brand takes the win this round with 12% of your daily fiber requirements in one brat. ROUND 6 PROTEIN FIELD ROAST - 28g BEYOND - 16g YVES - 18g WINNER - FIELD ROAST FIELD ROAST jumps significantly ahead this round with a whopping 28g of protein per brat destroying the competition. Both the YVES and BEYOND varieties have less than 20 grams per brat putting them in second and third place respectively. ROUND 7 VITAMINS & MINERALS WINNER - YVES Going solely off of the information provided on the nutritional charts, the YVES variety packs in the most nutrients per brat with over 20% of your daily requirement of 5 vitamins & minerals. Definitely the front runner this round! WINNER .......... ......... ........ ....... ...... ..... .... ... .. . IT'S A TIE BEYOND & YVES Well folks, we have another tie! Both the BEYOND brats and the YVES brats took the win in 3 rounds with FIELD coming in with only one win. This is actually a good thing because variety is the spice of life right? Enjoy these brats comfortably with the knowledge that they are the very best choice in terms of nutrition! beyondmeat.com yvesveggie.ca fieldroast.com Summer is upon is which means we're all eagerly awaiting firing up the barbecue! Barbecued anything is automatically delicious, there's just no comparison to food fresh off the barbecue. With this in mind, it's time for another product battle! Hot dogs are a cult classic, something I'm sure we've all eaten at one time or another and from the barbecue, they couldn't be more delicious. It's now time to find out exactly which dog is the most nutritious choice. Let's meet the competitors! ROUND 1 CALORIES YVES - 60 MAPLE LEAF - 90 LIGHTLIFE - 50 WINNER - LIGHTLIFE The Lightlife brand comes in at the least amount of calories per wiener with the Yves brand coming in at a very close second. Unfortunately for the real meat variety, they are almost double the calories per link of the winning brand and after you factor in toppings and bun, they are creeping up into dangerous calorie territory. ROUND 2 FAT YVES - 1.5g / 2% DV MAPLE LEAF - 7g / 11% DV LIGHTLIFE - 2g / 3% DV WINNER - YVES Both plant based options were low in fat but the YVES variety was the lowest with only 1.5g of fat per wiener. Unfortunately for the meat based Maple Leaf brand, they came in a very distant last with 11% of your daily allowance of fat for only 1 wiener. You'd certainly have to watch what you paired your dog with to keep the fat in check. ROUND 3 SODIUM YVES - 250mg / 10% DV MAPLE LEAF - 330mg / 14% DV LIGHTLIFE - 330mg / 14% DV WINNER - YVES Let's face it, hot dogs are not a health food and are pretty heavily processed meaning they should only be a once and a while treat. The Yves brand is the clear winner this round with 80mg less of sodium per link. Both the Lightlife and Maple Leaf brands tied for second place with 330mg per link. Ultimately, they are all pretty sodium heavy so it'd be wise to pair your dogs with a nice, fresh salad to balance things out. ROUND 4 FIBER YVES - 0g MAPLE LEAF - 0g LIGHTLIFE - 1g WINNER - LIGHTLIFE Fiber is crucial to our body's optimal functionality and none of these options provides a worthwhile amount of fiber. Lightlife is the only brand that contains any fiber with 1g per link. Again, hot dogs are definitely not a health food but Lightlife would be the best option for fiber. ROUND 5 PROTEIN YVES - 9g MAPLE LEAF - 5g LIGHTLIFE - 7g WINNER - YVES! Both plant based options offer up more protein per link than their meat based competitor but the YVES version comes out on top with 9 grams of protein per link. Another example of shattering the myth that vegetarians / vegans don't get as much protein as meat eaters. ROUND 6 VITAMINS & MINERALS WINNER - YVES Going solely off the information provided, the YVES brand of wieners contains the most vitamins & minerals per link. You're getting over 10% of your daily requirement of B6, Niacin, B12, Thiamin, Zinc, and Iron per link. Definitely the clear winner in this category. WINNER ........... ......... ........ ....... ...... ..... .... ... .. . YVES It was a close race between both plant based wieners but the YVES brand comes out on top as the most nutritious choice of the three competitors. Unfortunately for the real meat Maple Leaf brand, they couldn't compete and lost every single round. As I mentioned, hot dogs are a once and a while treat but going with the YVES variety will give you a good dose of vitamins and minerals & protein without an abundance of fat or calories. Make sure to come back again for the next product battle to find out which product is the most nutritious choice! HAPPY VEG Photos & Nutritional Information Taken From;
mapleleaf.ca yvesveggie.ca lightlife.com How nostalgic is a deli slice sandwich? It brings me back to grade school with my little lunch box stuffed with a piece of fruit, some goodies, and my lunch meat sammie. Admittedly, I disliked almost every lunch meat on the market because I found them all slimy and unpleasant but there were a few that I loved. I was also a big fan of sub night at our house growing up which included various lunch meats and all the veggie fixins you could ask for. Lunch meat definitely brings me back and since going vegetarian, I've tried a few different plant based lunch meats that I absolutely loved and some that well, I simply didn't. That being said, these plant based lunch meats have come a long way and give you the same satisfaction of any deli style lunch meat from back in the day. Knowing this, we're going to let three of the leading plant based deli "turkeys" battle it out for most nutritious choice. Let's find out who's involved in this little nutrition scuffle.
ROUND 1 CALORIES LIGHTLIFE - 100 TOFURKY - 100 YVES - 80 WINNER - YVES All three competitors are extremely close in this race but the YVES version comes in at 20 calories less per serving. Might not seem like an exceptional win but every calorie counts they say! ROUND 2 FAT LIGHTLIFE - 3.5g / 5% DV TOFURKY - 3.5g / 4% DV YVES - 1g / 2% DV WINNER - YVES Yves veggie turkey comes out on top again with 2.5g of fat less per serving than both of the other brands. You could double up on the meaty slices and still take in less fat than one serving of either of the other two brands. YVES is the clear winner this round. ROUND 3 SODIUM LIGHTLIFE - 290mg / 12% DV TOFURKY - 350mg / 15% DV YVES - 300mg / 13% DV WINNER - LIGHTLIFE Another super close round here with all 3 competitors within 60mg of one another. Lightlife however comes out on top just barely edging out the YVES brand with 10mg less per serving. Keep in mind, all 3 brands have a pretty significant amount of sodium so you'll want to watch what toppings you use as well as making sure to drink lots of water. ROUND 4 FIBER LIGHTLIFE - 2g / 8% DV TOFURKY - 1g / 4% DV YVES - 0g / 0% DV WINNER - LIGHTLIFE Fiber is a necessary part of our health and well being contributing to a healthy gut and digestive tract. Lightlife brand provides the most fiber per serving with almost 10% of your daily requirement of fiber. Unfortunately for the YVES brand, it offers absolutely no fiber whatsoever which is a major letdown. ROUND 5 PROTEIN LIGHTLIFE - 14g TOFURKY - 13g YVES - 13g WINNER - LIGHTLIFE You can't go wrong with any of these options when you're talking about protein but the LIGHTLIFE brand inches ever so slightly ahead with 14g of protein per serving. ROUND 6 VITAMINS & MINERALS WINNER - YVES Although the other two options also offer up some vitamins, the YVES version gives you 20% of your daily B12 and Iron. B12 is reputably one of the hardest vitamins for plant based eaters to get as it naturally comes from animal products meaning the YVES version is fortified for better nutrition. WINNER .......... ......... ........ ....... ...... ..... .... ... .. . IT'S A TIE YVES & LIGHTLIFE! We have a tie folks! Both the YVES & LIGHTLIFE brands took home 3 wins each leaving the Tofurky brand in a very distant last place. Although we should always try to eat as many fresh and unprocessed foods as possible, rest assured that eating either of the winning brands once and awhile won't hurt your waistline. Make sure to come back again for the next product battle! HAPPY VEG Information and photos taken respectively from;
yvesveggie.com tofurky.com lightlife.com Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and a well rounded breakfast will set you up for success. Whether you're a sweet or savoury breakfast person, you're bound to enjoy a plant based sausage here or there and I'm about to put these sausages to the test to find out which plant based breakfast sausage gives you the most nutritional bang for your buck. I've tried all of today's competitors and have enjoyed all 3 of them at one point or another. I have a favourite in mind in terms of flavour but I won't divulge that information until this little challenge is over with. We'll be comparing them on a per serving basis, taking into consideration the smaller serving size for the Gardein Saus'ages. Let's meet the competitors!
ROUND 1 CALORIES YVES - 70 BEYOND - 180 GARDEIN - 70 WINNER -- YVES! Both the Gardein & Yves variety of sausages have 70 calories per serving but when you factor in the smaller serving size of the Gardein saus'sages, it's clear the Yves sausages are the lowest calorie option. Two links clock in at only 70 calories leaving you plenty of wiggle room for the rest of your plate. ROUND 2 FAT YVES - 1.5g / 2% DV BEYOND - 12g / 23% DV GARDEIN - 3.5g / 4% DV WINNER -- YVES Yves was the clear winner this round coming in at only 1.5g of fat per serving of two breakfast links. Gardein wasn't far behind with 3.5g but the clear loser here is the Beyond Meat sausages. You get nearly a quarter of your daily fat allowance in one serving of the Beyond patties which means you now have to monitor what you're consuming for the rest of the day to avoid overdoing it on the fat. Yves is the clear winner this round! ROUND 3 SODIUM YVES - 450mg / 19% DV BEYOND 270mg / 12% DV GARDEIN - 300g / 13% DV WINNER - BEYOND MEAT Beyond Meat comes in with the lowest amount of sodium per serving which is quite surprising considering how poorly Beyond faired in the previous two rounds. Yves on the other hands provides a whopping 20% of your daily sodium allowance per serving which can set you on a track towards overdoing your salt intake for the day. Too much salt is a dangerous thing for our bodies so we must make choices to minimize our intake where applicable. Beyond Meat is the winner! ROUND 4 FIBER YVES - 1g / 4% DV BEYOND - 2g / 7% DV GARDEIN - 1g / 4% DV WINNER -- BEYOND MEAT Of the three options, Beyond Meat offers an additional gram of fiber per serving making it the winner of this round. Unfortunately, none of the options offers up a large amount of fiber so I would suggest pairing your patties with some fibrous veggies / fruit to round out your meal. ROUND 5 PROTEIN YVES - 10g BEYOND - 11g GARDEIN - 6g WINNER -- BEYOND MEAT The protein round is always my favourite because it really demonstrates the fact that plant based meats can offer up a healthy dose of muscle building protein in every serving. This was a close race but the Beyond Meat breakfast sausages take the win with 11g of protein per serving. ROUND 6 VITAMINS & MINERALS WINNER -- YVES When it comes to vitamins and minerals, I can only compare what information is being given on the nutrition labels and in this case, Yves is the winner by leaps and bounds. Offering up hefty amounts of Vitamin B12, Thiamin, Iron, and Zinc, the Yves links definitely provide the biggest dose of vitamins and minerals per serving! WINNER .......... ......... ........ ....... ...... ..... .... ... .. . IT'S A TIE! YVES & BEYOND MEAT We have ourselves a tie folks! Yves took the win for the calories, fat, and vitamins rounds while the Beyond Meat took home the protein, fiber, and sodium rounds. Unfortunately for the Gardein brand, they were a distant last place taking home not a single win in any of the rounds. What this means is variety is your best approach here when it comes to breakfast sausages. It also means that a balanced breakfast including fruits and veggies is the best way to ensure you have a bountiful and nutritious plate before you in the morning. Make sure to tune in next time for another product battle! HAPPY VEG Nutritional Information and Photos Taken From:

The patties are large and fit perfectly on an english muffin which was point number one for these patties. Second point? The smell! When they start sizzling away in their glorious juices, the smell is super enticing to me. The only way I can describe the smell is savoury and hunger inducing. In terms of taste, they hit every mark. They're juicy, a bit spicy, savoury, and incredibly meaty, all the things I want from a vegan breakfast patty. In fact, I would say I prefer these over the Beyond Burgers and considering my staunch love for anything burger, that's quite an accomplishment.
BYPASS or BUY - - BUY! Guys, if you can get your hands on these, you won't be disappointed. As I said, they're juicy, super savoury, flavourful, and the perfect addition to your breakfast routine. By far one of my favourite vegan meats on the market and definitely my favourite breakfast patty of all the ones I've tried. Also, I hear they've introduced a spicy version which frankly, I'm slayed. Have you tried them? What were your thoughts? Want more Beyond Meat? Visit their website for recipes, products, and information. www.beyondmeat.com HAPPY VEG
As the patties sizzled away, my house filled with an aroma that I can only liken to dog food coming out of the microwave. The smell was so unbelievably unpleasant and hard to ignore that even my family members expressed their condolences for what I was about to consume. I tried to ignore the odour but it had permeated my nose and left a lasting stinky impression that worried me tremendously. Smell has a lot to do with how excited I am to eat something. I can look at a steaming pile of garbage and get excited to sink my teeth in if it smells good. Unfortunately, these burgers looked fabulous but smelled like a garbage truck.
After searing both sides, I melted my cheese on them in hopes of it masking whatever taste came along with that horrendous smell. After getting my burgers all set up, I sat down and prepared for the worst, believing I was about to engage in some burgers that my body would undoubtedly reject. I was pleasantly surprised with the flavour, they were pretty darned delicious. Whatever that horrendous smell was had not translated into the flavour of the burger which was a lovely surprise. The burgers were juicy, had good mouth feel, and complimented all of my toppings perfectly. I hate to admit it, but they were pretty darned delicious. BYPASS or BUY! -- BYPASS! Look, they were delicious, I'll give them that. Unfortunately, the pleasantries end there. The smell was so unforgiving and unforgettable that I don't think I would purchase these burgers again. When there's products like the Beyond Burgers on the market that smell AND taste delicious for the exact same price, I cannot justify purchasing these burgers again. If you guys are brave enough to give them a try, might I suggest a clothespin to seal your nose shut or perhaps waiting until you have a cold and cannot smell anything at all. Have you tried them? What were your thoughts? HAPPY VEG
The patties themselves are quite thin compared to other meat free burgers on the market but that's not an issue if you choose the right bun. Right out of the bag, I could smell the chipotle flavour coming through which I was super excited about. Anyhow, after frying them up and getting them nice and seared on both sides, it was time to sink my teeth into them.
There isn't much to say aside from, THEY'RE DELICIOUS! I loved everything about them. They were creamy on the inside yet still firm and held together really well unlike most bean based burgers. The flavour was so intensely chipotle forward, it was such a nice treat. When you're always eating beefy imitators, something that comes out of left field with this much flavour is such a breathe of fresh air. BYPASS or BUY! --- BUY! Get your hands on these burgers ya'll. They're so delicious, so flavourful, and frankly, economical when comparing to other burgers on the market. Under 5 dollars for 4 patties, you can't go wrong. I seriously suggest you guys pick up a bag and try them out for yourselves, I can't rave enough about them! HAPPY VEG The plant based meat market is growing rapidly. Every single day it seems there's a new burger, sausage, or plant based delight that resembles the texture, flavour, and look of meat. These products are taking the market by storm with meat eaters and veggies alike flocking to the market to snatch up their favourite plant based meats. In my opinion, it all started with the burger. Three companies in particular have released their version of the meatiest, "beefiest", plant based burgers and have received acclaim in their own right. Now, it's time to find out which of these three burgers gives you the most nutritious bang for your buck. Let's meet the competitors for this battle of the meatiest plant based patty on the market!
ROUND 1 CALORIES LIGHTLIFE - 270 IMPOSSIBLE - 240 BEYOND - 260 WINNER - IMPOSSIBLE The Impossible burger takes the victory this round with 240 calories per patty. Keep in mind however that this number is for the patty only, when you pile on the toppings and include a bun, you can expect that to be closer to 6 or 7 hundred calories. Regardless, Impossible is the winner this round! ROUND 2 FAT LIGHTLIFE - 17g / 21% DV IMPOSSIBLE - 14g / 18% DV BEYOND - 18g / 23% DV WINNER - IMPOSSIBLE The numbers don't lie folks, the Impossible burger has the least amount of fat per serving coming in 4g less per patty than the last place finisher, the Beyond burger. Let's take a look at Saturated Fat to see if that changes the tides here! ROUND 3 SATURATED FAT LIGHTLIFE - 2.5g / 13% DV IMPOSSIBLE - 8g / 40% DV BEYOND - 5g / 25% DV WINNER - LIGHTLIFE Well, this changes things a little doesn't it? Despite having the least amount of fat per serving, the Impossible burger packs a whopping 40% of your daily allowance of saturated fat per serving which doesn't leave you a lot of wiggle room for the rest of your day. Lightlife takes the win this round with only 2.5 grams per serving! ROUND 4 SODIUM LIGHTLIFE - 540mg / 23% DV IMPOSSIBLE - 370mg / 16% DV BEYOND - 350mg / 15% DV WINNER - BEYOND Beyond takes their very first victory of the competition providing the least amount of sodium per serving out of all 3 patties. In this case however, you'd be safe to go with either the Impossible or the Beyond burger if you're watching your sodium intake as they were both very close. Unfortunately, the Lightlife patty fails tremendously in this department offering up almost a quarter of your daily allowance for sodium in one patty. When you start piling on toppings and include the bun, the Lightlife burger would likely creep up into very dangerous territory. ROUND 5 DIETARY FIBER LIGHTLIFE - 2g / 8% DV IMPOSSIBLE - 3g / 11% DV BEYOND - 2g / 7% DV WINNER - IMPOSSIBLE All 3 options are very close this round but the Impossible patty offers up an additional gram of fiber per serving. FINAL ROUND PROTEIN LIGHTLIFE - 20g IMPOSSIBLE - 19g BEYOND - 20g WINNER - TIE! All 3 options offer up a hefty serving of protein but the Beyond and Lightlife patties come in at 20g of protein per patty meaning they tie for the win! WINNER .......... ......... ........ ....... ...... ..... .... ... .. . IMPOSSIBLE BURGER Although the Lightlife & Beyond patties were strong competitors, the Impossible Burger takes the victory for the most nutritious meaty burger. Coming in with less calories, less fat, and more fiber per serving, it's clear the Impossible Burger is the smartest choice when it comes to indulging in a big, juicy burger.
